Tuhan Selalu Punya Cara Mendekatkan yang Jauh Juga Menjauhkan yang Dekat, Untuk Itu Teruslah Berdoa

A financial settlement won't give you back your health if you've been diagnosed with mesothelioma a condition you probably developed because of long-term exposure to asbestos. But it can help pay for your astronomical medical bills, traveling to cancer centers, taking care of your family, and replenishing your bank account when you are forced to take time from work. But before you move ahead with a lawsuit, you need to pick the right lawyer to represent you a challenging task. Mesothelioma and Lawyers: Do Your Homework When considering legal representation, it's important to ask the lawyer questions so that you can get a feel for how he would represent you. "I would consider experience and record are there any pending cases?" says Tanis Hernandez, MSW, an outreach coordinator for the Center for Asbestos Related Disease in Libby, Mont. A number of pending, outstanding cases could be a warning sign of a lawyer who is either unsuccessful or inexperienced not someone you want representing you in a time-sensitive case. Hernandez also suggests asking questions about what kinds of lawsuits can be filed. A wrongful injury suit can benefit you during treatment, but this type of lawsuit can take years. A wrongful death lawsuit, she says, can be filed by your family if treatment isn't successful. Make sure that the lawyer tells you about both, and is willing to pursue both cases if need be. Mesothelioma and Lawyers: Go Online Doing research on the lawyers caseload involving mesothelioma and the success of prior lawsuits is an important place to start. "The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization [ADAO] would advocate for somebody to do the same amount of research on your legal team that you would for your medical team," says Doug Larkin, co-founder and communications director of the ADAO advocacy group, which is not affiliated with, and does not endorse, any law firm. Asign of a good law firm might be if it has had great financial success with lawsuits against large companies. "There's a lot of research that can be done online to see who the premiere plaintiff [suer] attorneys are," adds Larkin. Law firms often list online how much money they have won in various lawsuits for people with asbestos-related diseases like mesothelioma. Because money is already tight and a big concern for anyone paying for mesothelioma treatment, you may also want to look for a law firm that waives up-front fees. Many law firms confident in their ability to win a successful settlement will take their fees from the financial settlement. If they don't win your case, they don't get paid. Mesothelioma and Lawyers: Find the Right Fit While the success rates of the lawyers you interview are certainly important you are filing the lawsuit to get money, after all finding a lawyer you feel comfortable with is also important. You want to feel that the lawyer you work with is focused on your well-being, and the well-being of your family. Mesothelioma is a sensitive, emotional issue, and it's difficult to separate that from the legal aspects. With a good lawyer, you shouldn't have to. Paul S. Zygielbaum of Santa Rosa, Cal., was actually referred to a law firm by his oncologist. Zygielbaum had peritoneal (abdominal) mesothelioma, an extremely rare form of the disease. "I talked to an attorney, and the first thing he asked me was, 'Who is your doctor and have you arranged your medical care?'" he recalls. "He didn't ask me about my legal case at all he wanted me to survive." Encouraged by the lawyer's concern for his personal health and well-being, he continued consulting with him. But because of his unusual circumstances Zygielbaum had been exposed to asbestos in a variety of ways his lawyer referred him to a bigger firm with more resources and experience to handle the case. "I just felt so good about it," says Zygielbaum, because of the lawyer's honesty and interest. So he followed his recommendation and met with another law firm, which eventually took his case. Zygielbaum has a few words of advice for other mesothelioma patients trying to choose a lawyer: "You've got to feel comfortable with that person," he says, "because he will have an important role in your life."

Mesothelioma: Government Assistance Consider applying for state or federal financial assistance to help pay your medical and living expenses while you're unable to work. "I'd look at the Social Security Disability Program that can come with Medicare coverage," says Tanis Hernandez, MSW, an outreach coordinator for the Center for Asbestos Related Disease in Libby, Mont. Disability payments and Medicare coverage can help pay for at least some of your expenses, and provide living expenses. You can apply for federal Social Security Disability payments through your local office, and if you're approved, you may also qualify for Medicare. Medicaid is a state financial assistance program for health care services, and you can see if you qualify through your state Medicaid office. Mesothelioma: Clinical Trials Clinical trials are another way to receive the best possible treatment for mesothelioma, while still managing the cost of your cancer care; they are often free of charge, and you'll have access to the newest treatment options in mesothelioma cancer care. "There are a lot of experimental treatments always evolving for mesothelioma," says Hernandez, so those cutting-edge treatments may be a good option.

Fear is one of the first emotions that strikes after a cancer diagnosis. And if you're diagnosed with mesothelioma, fear becomes even stronger when the doctor starts talking about prognosis and statistics. Though treatment is certainly possible, the advanced stages of cancer when mesothelioma is often diagnosed are more challenging to treat, and the survival rate is poor. Also, because so many people with mesothelioma developed it because they were exposed to asbestos at work, the potential of a lengthy lawsuit looms, as do huge medical bills. So, getting fear in check is most important before you can move forward. Mesothelioma: Why People Are So Afraid People with a mesothelioma diagnosis are "truly scared," says Alan D. Valentine, MD, associate psychiatrist and associate professor of medicine (psychiatry) at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. There are several reasons for this. The late diagnosis and often poor prognosis are certainly factors, says Dr. Valentine. He also notes that the many advertisements that you see on television from law firms promoting lawsuits and settlements also give a certain graveness to the disease. In addition, mesothelioma doesn't get the publicity or public support that more common cancers like breast cancer do. "There's not a whole lot out there for them," says Valentine. "Put that together with a very scary diagnosis and I think that the anxiety and depression generally would be close to the top." People also might feel more isolated with this disease, he says, which can exacerbate fear. Mesothelioma: How to Calm Down and Cope Therapy and antidepressants are an option for helping to manage emotions like fear, anxiety, and depression that are common after a cancer diagnosis, says Valentine. While he says that patients should be screened to see if those therapies would offer benefit, they shouldn't automatically be prescribed. Be honest and realistic about what you're faced with, recommends Valentine. Accept your fear, anger, and other feelings don't feel like you have to be strong, stoic, and always positive. "Sometimes, that's asking a lot," he says. Instead, concentrate on what needs to happen, says Valentine, rather than what could happen. Focus on business obligations, taking medications, and moving forward with treatment, instead of wondering if the worst will happen. Valentine also recommends these mechanisms to cope with fear from a cancer diagnosis and to stay calm: Practicing guided imagery, in which you lead your thoughts to soothing images Trying self-hypnosis Joining a support group Getting regular, light exercise even walking or exercising in a chair Anything you can do to distract yourself and allow yourself to refocus on the task at hand rather than getting caught up in fear, anxiety, and "what ifs," Valentine says, will help you manage your fear. Mesothelioma: Dissipating Fear Paul S. Zygielbaum, from Santa Rosa, Calif., was in a bit of denial after he was diagnosed with peritoneal mesothelioma (in the abdomen) in 2004. Because he knew so little about his extremely rare type of cancer, he started doing research and what he read didn't make him feel any better. "It was very difficult. I'd wake up at night just frightened, thinking 'what's going to happen?'" Finally, "I just said, look, I've got to go on with my life during this diagnosis." And one night his fear turned into an answer. "I just had this flash that I needed to live, and needed to do what I could to make sure that other people didn't go through this," he says. Mesothelioma: Moving Forward Zygielbaum has been living with his disease for five years. While he has no need for treatment now, he knows that he probably will again. And most likely he will face the same fear. But he keeps going. Zygielbaum dedicates a lot of time volunteering with the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization and trying to get Congress to ban asbestos use in the United States. Zygielbaum approached his cancer like any other big problem in life. "I just felt like I needed to just deal with this in a problem-solving way." His logical approach, education about his cancer and treatment options, and a little laughter all helped him deal with his fear and move forward with his treatment and his life.

When youre faced with mesothelioma treatment expenses that can reach six figures, how to pay those bills may seem a bigger hurdle than the actual care. But different options are available to help pay for cancer care and treatment; you just need to know where to look. Mesothelioma: Talk to Your Social Worker When you choose the facility where you want to receive treatment for mesothelioma whether a hospital or cancer center consider the resources available there. "I would look for a social worker in that facility because they're going to know what resources they're used to dealing with on a regular basis," suggests Hernandez. Talk to the social worker in the hospital or cancer center that you're visiting, and ask her about options to help pay for your care and expenses. Hospitals and cancer centers may also have financial assistance programs or financing programs for people who are experiencing difficulty paying for their treatment, says Hernandez. Mesothelioma: Organizations to Help You There are many organizations that offer help in paying for care, offering free or inexpensive lodging while receiving treatment, says Hernandez. Organizations may also offer free or discounted airfare for people traveling for cancer treatment. The American Cancer Society is just one group that can lead you to help. Hernandez also suggests checking with the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization to see if its staff knows of any financial assistance programs for mesothelioma patients. Another organization to turn to for help is the National Cancer Institute. The cost of mesothelioma treatment is enormous, with or without insurance to cover some of the expenses. Cancer treatment can last for years, and shuttling back and forth to a long-distance cancer treatment center that specializes in mesothelioma can rack up huge bills. But with a little effort, you can find ways to help pay for your treatment.

Mesothelioma Pain: What It's Like Glynn Kron, 57, of Ponchatoula, La., didn't experience pain from his mesothelioma at first. In fact, he didn't experience any symptoms at all. "I went to a pulmonologist to receive help to quit smoking," says Kron, who says he probably was exposed to asbestos while working on cars, and as a teen, when he worked on construction jobs. When the doctor evaluated his health before prescribing him medication, she found a collapsed lung on the X-ray. After it wouldn't re-inflate, he says, the medical team took a look inside and found the tumor. It was diagnosed as mesothelioma in October 2007. He had major surgery in January 2008, which left a huge scar. "They cut a lot of nerves and muscle," says Kron. He lost his whole lung, part of the chest wall, the chest wall lining, and the heart lining. Today, he says, while he is cancer-free, he still has a lot of numbness and pain. Kron is still trying to find the right way to manage his pain post-surgery. He's taking medication, but doesn't want to keep taking it forever. "I tried some over-the-counter [OTC] pain medication but it's not strong enough and you have to take so many of them," he says. Plus, the cost of those OTC medications gets too high too quickly, since insurance won't pay for them. He's considering seeing a pain management specialist for better control. "It certainly has an impact," Kron says of his daily life with mesothelioma. He has problems bending over and even has difficulty tying his shoes. "Between the pain and the loss of the lung, it's reduced and changed my activities quite a bit."
